Leave-No-Trace Pocket Field Guide
State Park Metal Detecting Quick Reference Card
1. Pre-Trip Permit & Rules Checklist
Before packing your gear, verify these four essential questions:
- State Rules: Is this park on the designated allowed list or does it require individual permit paperwork?
- Permit Document: Do I have a physical copy or active email confirmation of my permit?
- Depth Limit: What is the legal maximum depth limit for targets (usually 6 inches)?
- Antiquities laws: What is the age threshold (50/100 years) for protected state property?
2. The Perfect Plug Cutting Technique
Cut grass plugs cleanly to ensure root survival and grass regrowth:
Step 1: Cut a three-sided horseshoe shape around the target. Leave the fourth side intact as a hinge.
Step 2: Use a plastic sheet or drop cloth next to your hole. Put all loose dirt directly onto this sheet.
Step 3: Fold the plug back. Pinpoint your target and extract it cleanly.
Step 4: Pour all soil from the sheet back into the hole, leaving zero loose dirt on the surface.
Step 5: Fold the plug back down. Step on it firmly to pack it back into place, ensuring it is flush with the lawn.
3. Code of Ethics Card

- I will collect and pack out all metallic trash I dig, helping to keep the parks clean.
- I will carry my permit in the field and comply with park rangers' instructions politely.
- I will report any historically significant objects to the park management.
